Finally, a Dorkism
Last weekend, we said goodbye to our Scarborough house of 24 years and hello to our temporary town house in Markham (boo hoo!) Moving to Markham gave me a reason to start to change some of my habits! Mainly, my daily dependency to drive! Instead, now I will be a Go Train person. I will live my life by a schedule, the train schedule, and I will drop all things and at exactly 5:18 so I can leave and catch my 5:30 train. Yes, even if we are in the middle of a meeting because being a "Go Train person" gives me a bonafide reason to up and go. It's acceptable at the workplace. :D A recalculation of sloth costs will come shortly once I get regular on the Go Train. This should benefit you, Bullpen Larry since our costs will now be more similar (though you take your Go Train from Langstaff - you'll have to discount that...)
Yesterday was my first day on the Go Train. I had to go with Cassandra, so that I wouldn't take the train up to Uxbridge by accident. We caught the 7:06am train at Unionville. Pretty good huh? I was so proud.
So today, I thought I'd check out the Richmond Hill station on my own. At first I thought I'd catch the 7:30 train to get in for 8:18. But on 2nd thought, that would mean I'd have to get up at 6:30. Nah, not today. So I aimed to catch the 8:00 train to arrive at 8:38.
I thought 15 mins driving time would be cool - I mean it's only a 5 minute drive from my house (more like 10mins now I know). Who would have thought there would be traffic on Major Mac? I get there 5 mins before 8 and I turn into the main parking lot. Wow, what a zoo! People running everywhere, the train is parked, cars coming in and out of the lot ... So as I turn in, I wonder - why are cars are turning out of the lot? They can't be going home ..unless they're coming off night shift? Then after turning in I realized that the lot was full. These cars were turning out to go to the FAR lot. So I turn back around, now rushing because I have less then 3 mins to find parking and get on the train. I contemplating on honking at the lady in front who was blocking the exit and wasn't moving even though the school bus was CLEARLY letting her turn left. But I didn't... she could beat me up for sure. Finally I get to turn left, I find a spot in the far lot across the street. I hurry out of my car, and start running across the lot. The Go Train bell is now ringing - uh oh! Run run run (in 3 inch heels mind you)...and before I could even leave the 2nd lot, the Train goes.......noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
So I keep walking towards the empty tracks. Since I realized that I still needed a ticket, I'll go and buy a 10 ride ticket. The ticket booth man asked me if I wanted a schedule for the Go Bus. Then I realized that 8:00 was the last train.
So now I walk back to my car. The parking lot is now peaceful, silent, as if that craziness of a rush never happened. That sight, which normally calms me, was just salt rub to the wounds, shouting "SUCKA" The next Go Bus would arrive at Union at 9:20. No way! I'd be so late! I can drive down faster than that - and in the comforts of my own car! So I get back into my car and start the drive down.
Well I know the 404 Southbound is nuts. So I was being *smart* and decided to take Bayview. Then I can shoot down when I get on the Bayview extension. The trek down Bayview was brutal. There was a 1 lane closure north of the 407. We were in gridlock. 1.5 hours later, I made it all the way to.....heppard.
By now, it's after 9am, so when I got to Eglinton, cars were allowed to park on the street, reducing Bayvew to 1 lane. Excellent. All I could think of was - don't worry I can burn down the Extension..over 90km! Until I get there and we crawled down it because of traffic. Finally I got into the office.
I waltzed into the office at 10am.
Excellent!

Haha.. that's not a dorkism. That's just life on the GO! My co-workers have these kinds of stories EVERY DAY.
*classic Anita* One of my favourite past-times on the train is looking out the window while the train is pulling out and counting how many people are left running for the train. So don't worry - whenever you catch yourself running for a train and missing it, just rest assured that you have provided entertainment for at least one person. Just try not to fall - that won't be so funny.
You know, Leslie is way faster getting to Eglinton to which point, is a great point hopping onto the DVP since the it opens up nicely. 404/DVP bottleneck is the 401 where no one in this city has any clue how to merge...
Yea I tried Leslie on Friday - you're right about Don Mills, that was great. The only problem was that it took me 1.5 hours to get from Major Mac & Leslie to Shepphard - parking lot all the way. Sokay, I am getting into the groove of catching the train! I was 10 mins early for the 8am today!! :D :D
Getting out of the Shabba chronic laziness syndrome will take a LONG time....
Keep up the good work
